Digitizing and Dictating Harry Potter, Takes 1, 2, & 3

Second and third dictation attempts
I spent an hour getting that mess.

I found my Kobo and I uploaded LIGHTSPEED People of Colo(u)r Destroy Science Fiction! Special Issue to it, though I haven’t started reading it yet. I’ve also received the paperback printing of it, all 453 pages of it. So excited to have time to start reading this anthology especially with my current project.

At the end of last month the Goodwill close to me was closing down for renovations and having a giant sale to get rid of as much stock as possible. Someone donated the entire Harry Potter series on CD and they were in pretty good condition. This gave me an idea: let’s see if the audio files can be dictated to text using my computer’s built-in dictation software.

I’ve finished digitizing all seven books (each book has approximately 8 hrs. of audio) and my first attempt to have Jim Dale dictate failed because the dictation software will not run at the same time as a program producing audio (at least not at the same time as iTunes).

The second and third attempts failed because the dictation software that is part of the computer’s OS isn’t quick enough to pick up all of the speech. Plus the accuracy was in the toilet. So my next step is to find an application that can pick up what my digitized files are putting down. Mainly because I’m hoping to not have to figuratively watch the pot to make sure it boils. I’d much rather play the digitized files while I do other things (like read a book) instead of dictating the entire book. I’m going to research programs this week (because I’d rather not spend $175 on Dragon Naturally Speaking, have it not work, then have to go through the process of returning it).

Have a good week!
